Be [Clean] $13.98 Electric Circus cost and won Common some fans. It was very exploratory, especially so for a rap album released in 2002, containing developments — some of which soared, some of which sank — that few longtime followers could have foreseen. Listeners either felt Common was picking up fresh, new inspirations, or that he was just being distracted by a whole lot of ill-fitting nonsense. With Be, it seems the MC has realized that not every album that’s sprawling and eclectic is as good as Electric Ladyland or Songs in the Key of Life. More notably, he might’ve been struck with the fact that a high percentage of excellent albums are around 40 minutes in length and are built on a unified sound. Be is highly concentrated, containing 11 songs and involving two producers and a small number of guests. It’s a 180 degree turn from Electric Circus, and in a bizarre way it’s both a progression and a back-to-basics move. Kanye West and Dilla are key to the album’s steadiness, rooting the sound in ’70s soul and soul-jazz. That’s no shakeup, but the two producers deserve some form of award for stringing together a consistent sequence of productions that is never monotonous, dull, or all that flashy. Even lead single “The Corner,” heard well before Be’s release, falls into the fabric of the album on first listen, as if that were where it belonged all along. Lyrically, Common comes back down to Earth — the narratives are sharp as ever, the gripes are more like observations than screeds, and the eccentricities need to be teased out rather than swatted away. Be isn’t likely to be referred to by anyone as groundbreaking, but it’s one of Common’s best, and it’s also one of the most tightly constructed albums of any form within recent memory. [The album was also made available in a clean version.] ~ Andy Kellman, All Music GuidePerformers: A-Trak – Scratching; DJ Dummy – Scratching; Derrick Hodge – Bass (Acoustic); John Legend – Vocals (Background); Mister Lonnie & The Kids Lynn – Vocals (Background); John Mayer – Vocals (Background); Num Amun-Tehu – Percussion; James Poyser – Keyboards, Strings; |

Stankonia [Clean] $8.98 Stankonia was OutKast’s second straight masterstroke, an album just as ambitious, just as all-over-the-map, and even hookier than its predecessor. With producers Organized Noize playing a diminished role, Stankonia reclaims the duo’s futuristic bent. Keyboardist/producer Earthtone III helms most of the backing tracks, and while the live-performance approach is still present, there’s more reliance on programmed percussion, otherworldly synthesizers, and surreal sound effects. Yet the results are surprisingly warm and soulful, a trippy sort of techno-psychedelic funk. Every repeat listen seems to uncover some new element in the mix, but most of the songs have such memorable hooks that it’s easy to stay diverted. The immediate dividends include two of 2000′s best singles: “B.O.B.” is the fastest of several tracks built on jittery drum’n'bass rhythms, but Andre and Big Boi keep up with awe-inspiring effortlessness. “Ms. Jackson,” meanwhile, is an anguished plea directed at the mother of the mother of an out-of-wedlock child, tinged with regret, bitterness, and affection. Its sensitivity and social awareness are echoed in varying proportions elsewhere, from the Public Enemy-style rant “Gasoline Dreams” to the heartbreaking suicide tale “Toilet Tisha.” But the group also returns to its roots for some of the most testosterone-drenched material since their debut. Then again, OutKast doesn’t take its posturing too seriously, which is why they can portray women holding their own, or make bizarre boasts about being “So Fresh, So Clean.” Given the variety of moods, it helps that the album is broken up by brief, usually humorous interludes, which serve as a sort of reset button. It takes a few listens to pull everything together, but given the immense scope, it’s striking how few weak tracks there are. It’s no wonder Stankonia consolidated OutKast’s status as critics’ darlings, and began attracting broad new audiences: its across-the-board appeal and ambition overshadowed nearly every other pop album released in 2000. [Stankonia was also released in a "clean" edition, containing no profanities or vulgarities.] ~ Steve Huey, All Music GuidePerformers: Big Boi – Vocals; Dré – Vocals |

FanMail [Clean] $8.98 Crazysexycool was one of those records that defined an era. Few records before it combined hip-hop and classic soul songwriting quite as intoxicatingly or gracefully — the performances and productions were utterly seamless. It would have been difficult to top anyway, but TLC had it doubly bad, since a number of behind-the-scenes problems delayed a sequel for nearly five years. As with any eagerly anticipated record, that follow-up, FanMail, arrived with too many expectations. And initially, it may be disappointing to realize TLC doesn’t forge new ground with FanMail, but after a few spins, it settles in that nobody else makes urban soul quite as engaging as this. Not that it was easy to make this record, as the head-spinning list of collaborators indicates. Almost ten producers worked on the record, all trying to replicate the easy, appealing sound of Crazysexycool. And “replicate” is the right word, since there are no new innovations on FanMail, apart from a few lifts from the Timbaland book of tricks. Nevertheless, that may be for the best, since TLC and their army of producers have spent time crafting the songs and productions, turning FanMail into a record that almost reaches the peaks of its predecessor. By the end of the record, it appears that they can do it all — funky, hip-hop-fueled dance-pop, seductive ballads, and mid-tempo jams — and they can do it all well. Other groups try to reach these heights, but they don’t have the skills or the material to pull it off quite so well. True, the five-year wait felt interminable, and they’re now standard-bearers instead of pioneers, but if takes TLC as long to make a sequel to FanMail, so be it — they have one of the best track records in ’90s urban soul. [Fanmail was also released in a "clean" edition, containing no profanities or vulgarities.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music GuidePerformers: Necia Bray – Vocals (Background); Kandi Burruss – Vocals (Background); Tameka “Tiny” Cottle – Vocals (Background); Dallas Austin – Vocals; Leslie Brathwaite – Vocals; Paulinho Da Costa – Percussion; Nathan East – Bass; Joi Gillia |

R. [Clean] $15.98 At the beginning of the ’90s, R. Kelly was seen as a lewd, lascivious soulman. By the end of the decade, he had stripped those adjectives away and was seen as a contemporary equivalent of Marvin Gaye, thanks to the enormous success of “I Believe I Can Fly.” Appropriately, R., the double-disc album that followed “I Believe I Can Fly”‘s parent album, finds Kelly trying to live up to that legacy. He may be talented, but he has neither the vision nor the depth to match such classic soulmen as Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Prince or Michael Jackson, all artists he emulates on R. Kelly’s main strength is fusing contemporary material together into a slick, palatable, radio-ready record. Nobody else could have Jay-Z and Celine Dion on their album, and he’s about the only one who could make it work, since he can work sensuous grooves as well as he can deliver a soaring ballad. To some, this may sound like nothing more than calculation — a big part of the reason why he doesn’t instantly enter the hall of greats — because it’s easy to see how he pieces it all together. When he’s on, however, such calculation doesn’t really matter, since it all flows, but such incidents only occur through about 40-percent of R. That’s a major problem, considering the sheer length of the album. Clocking in at 29 long tracks, it takes real effort to sit through the record from beginning to end, especially since Kelly begins to repeat himself. If it was pruned a bit, the album would arguably be his best record. As it stands, R is an admirable effort, one that is among his better records even with all of its faults. [R was also released in a clean version, with all vulgarities removed.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music GuidePerformers: Roy “Royalty” Hamilton – Vocoder; Tawatha Agee – Vocals (Background); Marjette Alston – Vocals (Background); Blackie – Vocals (Background); Robert Bowker – Vocals (Background); Troy Bright – Vocals (Background); Dennis Collins – Vocals (Background); Yvonne Gage – Vocals (Background); Diva Gray – Vocals (B |
